Ingrid Formanek

Pioneering broadcast journalist Ingrid Formanek joined CNN in 1985 as a video editor and began her international work three years later as a producer. Formanek was one of two lead producers responsible for CNN’s groundbreaking live coverage of the 1991 Gulf War, making broadcast history in the opening days of the war and sealing CNN’s reputation as the world’s trusted source for international news.

She has since worked in some of the world’s most difficult and dangerous places, and has helped lead CNN’s coverage of the climate crisis. In 2022, she was the executive in charge of setting up CNN’s operations on the ground in Ukraine. The network’s coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine earned CNN The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences award for outstanding live breaking news coverage.

Formanek has won numerous accolades, including News Emmy, George Polk, DuPont-Columbia, Peabody, RTS, Gracie, and Amnesty International Media awards, both individually and as part of a network team. She teaches seminars, and mentors and develops future generations of journalists.
