Marcus Yam

Marcus Yam is an international visual correspondent at The Globe and Mail. A photojournalist focused on conflict and its human consequences, he documents resilience, loss, and survival in some of the world’s most volatile regions.
He previously worked for the Los Angeles Times, where he reported on war, displacement, and political upheaval across the US and internationally.
In 2022, Yam received the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for his coverage of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. He is a two-time recipient of the Robert F Kennedy Human Rights Journalism Award, including for his portrayal of the everyday plight of Gazans in 2019. In 2023, he earned the Overseas Press Club’s Robert Capa Gold Medal for his coverage of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Most recently, Yam was a 2025 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, where he examined global conflict and the idea that journalism is an act of shared humanity.
