Venezuelan Investigative Journalist In Exile, Armando.Info

Roberto Deniz

Venezuelan investigative journalist Roberto Deniz has been part of the Armando.info team since 2016. The only Venezuelan media outlet dedicated to investigative journalism, it was awarded a Maria Moors Cabot Prize in 2019.

For years Deniz has investigated and uncovered large cases of corruption in Venezuela with a transnational reach. In addition to participating in major investigations such as the Panama Papers, Paradise Papers, and Pandora Papers, coordinated by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, Deniz revealed the case of Colombian businessman Alex Saab, accused of being a figurehead for Nicolás Maduro and extradited to the US in 2021. Because of this case, Deniz had to leave Venezuela and has been in exile in Colombia since 2018, where he has continued his work at Armando.info.

In 2024, Armando.info and PBS premiered the Frontline documentary A Dangerous Assignment: Uncovering Corruption in Maduro’s Venezuela, which includes Deniz’s years of investigative work into the Alex Saab case.

He previously worked for El Universal and has collaborated with several international media outlets to cover the political and economic crisis in Venezuela. He is regularly invited by international organisations and forums to expose cases of corruption in Venezuela, and has received numerous awards both in his home country and in Latin America.
