Timour Azhari

Chief Correspondent in Saudi Arabia, Reuters

Timour Azhari

Timour Azhari has covered the Middle East for a decade, reporting from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Oman, and is now the chief Reuters correspondent in Saudi Arabia.

His work spans months-long investigations, which have uncovered corruption at Lebanon’s central bank, the ongoing plight of Iraq’s Yazidi minority, and the shadowy remaking of Syria’s economy, to important quick-fire scoops, such as the launch of landmark talks between Syria and Israel, or just how much gold was left in Syria’s central bank days after Assad fell.

He became one of the youngest ever bureau chiefs at Reuters when he took over management of the Iraq bureau in 2023, aged 26. This year, he won a Reuters journalist of the year award as part of the Syria enterprise reporting team.

While still at university he interned at a local newspaper in Lebanon, then worked as a freelance and for regional outlets, and joined Reuters in 2021.
