Craig Newmark

Craig Newmark is the founder of classifieds ad site Craigslist, one of the earliest and most widely used online classifieds platforms. Through its broad adoption, the site contributed to demonstrating the practical utility and accessibility of internet-based services for everyday users.

He now engages in full-time philanthropy, focusing on helping and protecting people in areas such as cybersecurity, trustworthy journalism, and support for military families and veterans.

Newmark has cited early influences, including teachers who were Holocaust survivors, as formative in shaping his personal values and commitment to treating others with respect and integrity.

He began his career in software development, working at companies including IBM, Charles Schwab, and Bank of America. He worked at Craigslist for around 25 years, including in a customer service role which he retired from some years ago.
